New

I was awakened once more as the moon rose, and Gav announce the beginning of dawn, but until Gav announced the imminent sunrise, everyone stayed down. At sunrise, Daz stood up, picked up his camera, and headed off to find a shot. I think I heard him muttering "go hard" as he left. A poet once told me that there is a peculiar endorphine that is released into the brain that gives a unique high only when you watch a sunrise, so I got up, got myself a glass of red, then another, and then followed Daz.

The day was totally different to the 31st. The sky was clear and the wind was warm. I lost sight of Daz, and when the light was enough to see the beach I noticed that it was completely vacant. No Jehovas Witnesses, no Daz.

Shortly two girls turned up. One walked down to the beach and put her foot in the water. Excited she turned to her friend and shouted something I couldn't hear over the sea. Soon they were both stripping to their underwear and running into the ocean. I rubbed my eyes but they were still there. I gawked for a couple of minutes and then decided I had to find Daz and tell him.

When I got back to the fire, I persuaded Daz to change into his togs, have a glass of red and a green-brownie and come for a dip with the underwear girls. While shouting and singing in the new-years' waves, we realized that the new year wasn't yet half way round the globe. Celebrations were hitting Greece and Egypt where we had other friends. We shouted 'Happy New Year' to them, and to other lone souls who wandered the beach at this early hour and went back to wake the others.
